this receipt was found tucked behind the
portrait of frank james
1881- sargent saw his family off to america

during his early period

a very simple test
showed that the douglas haig painting
and the james brothers were painted by the same person
the test - we held them up to bright sunlight
the faces turned to a special color
sunlight can be mmore revealing than x ray
mystery of the receipt solved
1881 sargent orders at least 2 blank canvases
from voisin company
sargent makes a deposit
sargent picks up the canvases and pays the balance
he buys a dozen tumblers
also buys 3 cups and saucers
why only 3 cups and saucers
sargent's party was 3 people
his mother -father - and himself
the 3 cups allowed them to take tea on the voyage to america
sargent disapears for almost a year
plenty of time to create the james portraits
the " tramp " near the end
observe his beard
it is whiter on one side
the same as sargents
tramp and hermit
give very close attention to th hands
sargent was a master at presenting hands

he is only a 4 hour train ride from clay county missouri - home
of his old friend frank james.
he visits frank james
frank tells him the good days are gone - today i am just a tramp
melvin purvis of
florence south carolina was the previous owner of the two portraits
purvis was a pinkerton agent
later a famous g man
melvin purvis is the most likely person in america , to be the owener
of the 2 portraits of frank & jesse james
here is how things likely went
1882 jesse james is killed
the blood spatered portraits were
sent to pinkerton in chicago
proof that jesse james was dead - send the reward money.
1934 melvin purvis people kill
john dillinger [ modern jesse james ]
pinkertons give the portraits to melvin purvis - for a job well done
purvis always collected some momento from crimes he was involved.
purvis would not have bought the pictures- not his style
1984
25 years after melvin purvis death
the heirs of melvin purvis sold the
collection of momentos - it took 3 days
there were hundreds and hundreds of items
there was only 2 paintings
